“Energy is Infinite”

A REMINDER THAT NO MATTER WHAT LIFE THROWS YOUR WAY, YOU HAVE THE ENERGY, WISDOM, AND POWER TO LIVE TO YOUR FULL POTENTIAL

You see, I am what some people refer to as a “part time dad”.  I hate that term, because for me, my thoughts and love is full time with Piper.  I never stop thinking about how she is interacting with other kids at school.  How she is handling the pressures of having divorced parents.  How she is being disciplined at her moms house, or what kind of garbage she is being fed both at her other home and at school.

At 7, she is really starting to form her own opinions on so many things.  I worry about how much time she spends with electronics and technology 3 inches from her face.  At her moms house she has a DVD library that rivals Netflix.  She has seen each one at least 3 times and I often hear her re-enacting scenes from Princess Bride with perfect voice inflection and timing.  Her impression of Vincini is quite impressive.  “Inconceivable”.  She keeps using that word, but I do not think it means what she thinks it means.

I say all that to say that while film and technology has a part (I am a filmmaker, so I hope it has a part), it shouldn’t be used as a babysitter or a mode of distraction.  TV’s and video games cannot become the parent of our kids.  Nothing can replace the power of sitting down and helping our kids learn that there are 60 seconds in a minute, and 60 minutes in an hour, or drawing a picture of our stomachs and illustrating why it is important to eat fruit only when our bellies are empty.

I learned that Piper has a desire to learn what makes me tick.  I learned a lot this summer and enjoyed every minute of it.
Piper came to me at the beginning of the summer with a backpack full of DVDs and video games asking for diet coke and chicken strips for lunch.  She left with a carrot in one hand, a baggie of cut kiwi and humming Bob Dylans “All I Really Want to Do” and reminding me not to chew gum because it makes your stomach think food is coming.
“Gotta let that stomach have a break” she said in her best “daddy” impersonation.

Perry Chen is not your average child. At the age of 11 he is already making a name for himself as a film and food critic in the San Diego area. Mr.Chen shares our passion for raw food. When channeling the ancient spirits, one must be wary, proper technique and awareness of environment is essential:

• A large cutting surface, like a wooden cutting board is a great place to perform this ancient ritual.
• One must have the proper stance, legs firmly planted.
• The larger the knife, the better.
• 3 cuts is all you need, anything more and you bring your family dishonor.
• When a straw is unavailable, opt for a swift pour into a wide mouthed cup.
• Consume.
• Repeat.
• Frequently.
